Sunday Love Affair #7:One Good Earl Deserves A Lover by Sarah MacLean

Sunday Love Affair is a new feature here at Books of Love which spotlights Romance and Urban Fantasy titles. I like reading them. I was inspired by Parajunkee and Book Addict Patti by their Romancing the Weekends and realize I miss reading Romances and Urban Fantasy. I've been wanting to spotlight them as well, so decided to start a feature.
Oh Button was made by me and Jennifer The Book Nympho did the text.

Book Synopsis:

Lady Philippa Marbury is odd. The bespectacled, brilliant fourth daughter of the Marquess of Needham and Dolby cares more for books than ballls, flora than fashion and science than the season. Nearly engaged to Lord Castleton, Pippa wants to explore the scandalous parts of London she’s never seen before marriage. And she knows just who to ask: the tall, charming, quick-witted bookkeeper of the Fallen Angel, London’s most notorious and coveted gaming hell, known only as Cross.

Like any good scientist, Pippa’s done her research and Cross’s reputation makes him perfect for her scheme. She wants science without emotion-the experience of ruination without the repercussions of ruination. And who better to provide her with the experience than this legendary man? But when this odd, unexpected female propositions Cross, it’s more than tempting…and it will take everything he has to resist following his instincts-and giving the lady precisely what she wants.

Book Review:

Sarah MacLean books are always fun to read. This one was no exception. I think that the characters she writes are much more human and based on real people. I felt that these characters could very much be in the modern world and it didn’t feel like a historical romance at all. Only the most skilled writers can do that.

Our hero and heroine couldn’t be more different as they come from what seems like two different worlds. What I liked about Philippa or Pippa as she is called is very odd indeed. She really likes to read about things and learn about things. Our hero is not what you call a nice guy by any standard at least in the beginning. Cross is what you would call a scoundrel. The Fallen Angel is a very interesting establishment.

What Pippa wants to know from him can’t be taught in a book, but rather has to be experienced. Once Pippa and Cross meet, things instantly change for these two characters as Pippa becomes more of a risk taker and does things that proper young ladies of society wouldn’t dare do in her position. The fact that she is engaged to a rather nice guy makes her wonder if she is making the right decision. I think that a lot of women at this time wondered if they were making that decision based on what their family wanted and expected of them or was it a love match.

Cross is different because he is a scoundrel in his own mind, when in fact he is a man who is wrestling with something that has happened in his past. He is not just a bookie, but rather a peer of the realm, Earl Harlow. He wasn’t supposed to be an Earl, but rather his brother was. His brother died and we don’t find this information out till much later in the book. Something horrible happened and he feels it was his fault.

What I love about the way that Cross and Pippa make love for the first time in the book is that you know these two start to have some genuine feelings for one another. Yet the two of them feel an attraction and don’t want to admit it is why something happens between them that neither of them can help. I loved it when Cross admitted he had feelings for her and she too. You would think this would solve the issues, yet it doesn’t because their moment of happiness is short lived.

Yet the villain of this book is someone that uses something painful to both Jasper aka Cross and Pippa. What he finds out could ruin both of them.  Knight uses his own daughter to achieve his own ends and is rather despicable in how he uses her and those around him to get what he wants.

What Pippa does is really surprising and noble. Plus I kind of like Pippa’s fiancĂ© Castleton. Castleton helps Pippa and Cross out despite Pippa breaking their engagement. He is rather okay with it. I know most men wouldn’t have been. Yet when they do get out of it, things end in the most wonderful way they could have.

I love Sarah MacLean’s novels because there is always that wonderful happy ever after.

  1. Ihave not read this author before but I have heard some good things about her books. I know this series is one that a lot of bloggers are liking and I know they are two stops featuring Sarah on Fire and Ice. I need to get with the program, this sounds like a nice romance!

  3. I think I've permanently outgrown historical romance. I love reading your reviews though, brings back memories of when I used stay up all night, flashlight in hand, back in High School reading regency romances.
